팜스프링스 폭발 사건 연루자, 의식불명 후 사망

워싱턴주 시애틀 인근에 거주하던 한국계 미국인 다니엘 종연 박(32세)이 팜스프링스 불임 클리닉 폭탄 테러 공모 혐의를 받고 체포된 지 불과 몇 주 만에 연방 교도소에서 사망했다.

미 법무부 연방 교정국은 박씨가 24일(화) 아침 캘리포니아 로스앤젤레스 소재 메트로폴리탄 구치소(Metropolitan Detention Center)에서 의식 없는 상태로 발견돼 병원으로 옮겨졌지만 사망했다고 밝혔다. 사인은 아직 공개되지 않았다.
박씨는 5월 17일 팜스프링스 소재 아메리칸 불임의학센터(Ameriacan Reproductive Centers: ARC) 앞에서 발생한 차량 폭탄 사건 주범인 가이 에드워드 바르쿠스(25세)에게 물질적 지원을 한 혐의를 받고 있다. 기소장에 따르면, 그는 바르쿠스에게 총 270파운드(약 122kg)의 질산암모늄을 배송했으며, 지난해 10월부터 올 5월까지 온라인을 통해 여러 차례 구매했다.
특히 박씨는 올 1월부터 바르쿠스와 함께 캘리포니아 투엔티나인 팜(Twentynine Palms)의 바르쿠스 집에서 폭발물 실험도 진행한 것으로 조사됐다. 이들은 온라인 포럼에서 출산 반대(anti‑natalism) 사상을 공유하며 인연을 맺었던 것으로 전해졌다.
박씨는 테러 지원 혐의로 6월 3일 폴란드에서 미국으로 강제 송환돼 뉴욕 JFK 공항에서 체포됐으며, 6월 13일 로스앤젤레스 구치소로 이송되어 재판을 기다리고 있었다.
당국은 바르쿠스의 차량 폭파를 ‘가장 큰 규모의 남부 캘리포니아 폭탄 테러’로 규정했으며, 이 사건을 미국 내 테러로 분류했다. 바르쿠스는 현장에서 사망했으며, 해당 폭탄은 클리닉을 크게 파괴하고 인근 건물의 유리창까지 산산조각 냈다. 이 과정에서 4명이 부상을 입었으나, 클리닉 내부의 수정란 등은 피해를 입지 않은 것으로 확인됐다.
현재 박씨의 사망 원인은 공식 발표되지 않았으며, 연방 교정국과 FBI, 미시 기립 국무부가 사망 경위를 조사 중이다. 사망 사건 자체는 아직 조사 단계에 있다.

Daniel Jongyon Park, a 32-year-old U.S. citizen accused of supplying explosive materials to the perpetrator of a fertility clinic bombing in Palm Springs, died in federal custody on June 24. Park had been arrested earlier this month after being extradited from Poland and was awaiting trial in Los Angeles.
According to federal authorities, Park provided over 270 pounds of ammonium nitrate to Guy Edward Bartkus, who carried out the attack on May 17. Park was found unresponsive in his cell at the Metropolitan Detention Center and later pronounced dead at a hospital. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed, and an investigation is ongoing.
Bartkus died at the scene of the bombing, which damaged the clinic and nearby buildings. Authorities described the attack as one of the largest bombing incidents in Southern California in recent memory.
