한인 정신건강 전문가 ‘한자리에’

15일 ‘줌’ 서밋 개최…MSG 주최, KAWA 등 협력

한인사회 정신건강 교육을 위한 비영리 단체 MSG(Mustard Seed Generation)가 이달 15일 시카고에서 활동하는 한인정신건강협회(KAWA) 등과 함께 미국 최초 한국계 미국인 정신건강 전문가 서밋을 개최한다.

이날 오전 11시부터 오후 2시(동부시각)까지 온라인 화상회의 프로그램인 ‘줌’(Zoom)을 통해 한국어와 영어로 열리는 이번 서밋에는 KAWA 외 한인 가정상담소(KFAM), 뉴욕 한인 봉사센터(KCS), 라이프케어 서비스(Lifecare Services) 등이 참여한다.

김영옥 KAWA 회장에 따르면, 이번 서밋은 KAWA 활동을 지켜본 MSG 설립자인 조세핀 김 교수(버지니아텍)가 미주 한인 정신건강 전문가들 모임 개최를 제안해 와 시작됐다. 취지에 공감해 뉴욕과 엘에이 등 다른 지역 한인 상담기관들에 연락을 해 결국 8월 15일 행사 개최에 이르게 됐다.

이날 오전 10시부터 한 시간 동안 네트워킹 후 오전 11시 10분부터 12시 20분까지 키노트 패널, 12시 25분부터 오후 1시 5분까지 워크숍1, 1시 10분부터 1시 50분까지 워크숍2가 진행되고 이후 상품 추첨으로 행사를 마무리할 예정이다. 영화 ‘워킹 데드’의 배우이자, 영화 제작자이기도 한 스티븐 연이 서밋 개회사를 맡을 것으로 알려졌다.

한국계 미국인 정신건강 전문가와 정신건강 분야를 공부 중인 학생 등이 참여할 수 있으며, 등록(https://natlsummit.eventbrite.com)하면 이메일로 줌 링크와 자세한 정보를 받아보실 수 있다.

등록비는 학생 15달러, 정신건강 전문가 30달러이다. 재정적 어려움이 있을 경우, 담당자 메일(admin@mustardseedgeneration.org)로 연락하면 등록비 면제 혜택도 받을 수 있다.

주최 측은 “서밋의 패널과 워크숍은 다양한 전문가들로 구성됐고, 참석자들의 개인적인 발전과 사회적 주제들을 다룬다”며 “한국계 미국인 정신건강 커뮤니티의 역사적인 순간에 많은 전문가가 함께해주길 바란다”고 당부했다.

김 회장은 “처음 열리는 전국 규모 서밋을 통해 미국 전역의 상담가들 네트워크가 형성되고, 상담이 필요한 한인들이 도움을 받을 수 있기를 바란다”며 “특히 KAWA와 같은 활동을 하고 싶은 다른 지역 분들이 노하우와 용기를 얻을 수 있었으면 좋겠다”고 말했다.

한편, MSG는 2007년 버지니아텍 총기 난사 사건 발생 후 이 학교 조세핀 김 교수가 한인 사회의 정신건강 교육을 위해 설립했다. 당시 사건 직후 버지니아텍 학장이 한국계 미국인인 김 교수에게 학교 주변 한인 공동체와 한인 학생들을 위한 상담을 요청한 것이 계기가 됐다.

2017년 본격적인 활동을 재개했으며, 현재 미주 한인 사회에 정신건강 자료와 정보를 제공하고 희망을 전달하면서 치유와 회복의 메시지를 전달해 오고 있다.

“There is hope and strength in shared cultural identity”

Dateline: [National, August 15th at 11a-2p EST] —Mustard Seed Generation will host an inaugural National Summit for Korean American Mental Health Professionals in partnership with five Korean American mental health organizations (JoonandDrSam, KAWA, KCSNY, KFAMLA, Lifecare Services). The goal is to unify the efforts of Korean American mental health organizations and professionals across the United States through a historic, annual gathering, because there is hope and strength in shared cultural identity.

Body paragraphs: Year 2020 is rife with medical, financial, social, and racial crises, and it has challenged the mental health of many. On the grounds, Korean American mental health professionals experience derision against Asians while bereaving those who were lost to COVID-19. They lament the increase in rates of domestic violence and child abuse during quarantine and school closures, while shouldering the burden as depression and anxiety debilitate young and old alike. The nation is divided, and as invisible “perpetual foreigners,” they are overlooked in the triangulation. For these reasons, the National Summit is an intentional space for those who serve the Korean American community and beyond through the toughest of times – a rare opportunity to grow with others who reflect facets of shared cultural identity and to stand together during divisive and tumultuous times.
