살다 보면 본의 아니게 ‘벌금’이란 걸 내게 된다. 안 내면 좋지만, 내 의지와는 무관하다. 그저 ‘작은 거’로 액땜하면 그나마 다행이라고 생각하는 게 건강에 좋다.

운전이 생활 일부가 된 미국에서는 더욱 그렇다. 차를 운행하다 이것저것 벌금을 낼 수밖에 없다. 과속이 대표적인 거라면, 신호 위반도 만만치 않다. 특히 미국에 있는 독특한, 그러나 도처에 있는 ‘빨간불 우회전 금지’(No Turn on Red)는 거의 함정에 가깝다.

거기에 걸렸다. 이른바 ‘Red Light Violation’. 이미 오래전 얘기다. 아는 형님 ‘멋진’ 가게 냈다고 해서 ‘팔아주러’ 갔다 오는 길 그만, 여기에 걸렸다.

알곤퀸 길에서 53번 국도(맞나. Illinois Route 53)로 진입하는 램프. 여기서 딱 걸렸다. 해 저문 시각, 초행길이었고 기억 안 나는데 빨강 신호등에서 ‘일상처럼’ 우회전 한 후과. 나중, ‘있어야 할 곳’ 생각은 했지만, 단속 당시엔 별생각 없었던 듯.

이 경우 벌금은 100불이다. 벌금 납부기한은 정확히 한 달. 그 안에 안 내면 당연히 연체료 있다. 돈은 냈다. 이 글, 이걸 말하려는 게 아니고.

미국 7년 살면서 ‘노 턴 온 레드’ 위반 두 번째다. 노스브룩 살 때 윌링 솔렉스 사거리에서 우회전하다 딱 걸렸다. 이때는 억울했다. 여기 이른바 함정 구역. 경고판 내 앞에 있지 않고 길 건너 저쪽 아주 작게 설치돼 있다. 여기 100이면 100 ‘당연한 비보호 우회전’ 여겨 빨간불에 우회전한다.

이 시점에 TV에서 한참 ‘함정 단속’ 보도도 나왔다. 고쳐지는 거, 물론 없었다. 없애느니 마느니 했지만, 그 뒤 ‘더 늘었다’는 기사만 봤다. 솔렉스 여기, 당연히 지금도 족족 걸린다.

Later, I realized that I shouldn’t have done it, but at the time of the violation, I didn’t think much of it.

This is the second time I’ve violated the “No Turn on Red” rule during my seven years in the United States. When I lived in Northbrook, I got caught turning right on red at the Willing SolEx intersection. I felt unjustly accused at the time. This is one of those trap zones. The warning sign is not installed in front of me, but rather across the street and very small. If it’s 100 here, I thought it was a natural unprotected right turn and turned right on red.
